In 2009 we are offering three sessions: May 11-15, May 18-22 and September 14-18
Spend your days riding the range at the base of the Steens mountains, roping and branding cattle in the meadows and visiting a mineral hot springs in the evenings to soak your roping arm and your saddle weary muscles.
Participants will feel history all around them as they stay on the ranch that was once the headquarters for Miller & Lux, and bunk in rock cabins and keep their horses in rock corrals built by the Basques who worked the ranch.
During the week participants will ride out at daylight with the crew and help with such things as sorting and branding rodear style, gathering and trailing cattle. There will be opportunities to improve such skills as ranch roping, cattle handling techniques and horsemanship.
Riders have a choice of bringing their own horses and keeping them at the ranch, horses need to be shod and conditioned for 5 days of riding over all types of terrain and averaging 8 hours as day in the saddle. The weather can range from rain or snow to 95 degrees F so check the forecast and pack accordinly. Horses and tack can be provided for overseas or participants traveling great distance at an additional cost of $100/day. This opportunity is for people who want to enjoy a beautiful remote setting, the buckaroo culture, and learn ranching and livestock handling skills.
Participants should also note that the world famous Jordan Valley Big Loop Rodeo is also held during this time, May 16-17 in nearby Jordan Valley. As well as the Harney Co Fair and Rodeo September 11-13.
Hurry, there are limited accomodations, and only a limited number of participants will be accepted! Send in your deposit today to hold your spot for this special experience. Or call Martin at 208-337-8438 for more details.

Reviews of the Alvord Ranch Experience
"My experience at the Alvord Ranch was above and beyond my expectations to say the least. Paul (the ranch owner) as well as Martin and Jen patiently work with me to provide me with an true authentic experience. They do this by providing precise instruction on how to gather, sort and prepare the cows for branding day. (which by the way, branding day is AWESOME !!) They also lend knowledge on cowboy etiquette, what to expect from your horse, as well as roping skills. It's like the "real deal" in slow motion. Aside from the ranch life experience, the exposure to the history of the area is fascinating and the trail riding is hard to beat! It proved to be an all around OUTSTANDING experience for me....one I hope to repeat !!" Tammy Alexander Washington Boro, PA
"Martin and Jen, Alvord Ranch was an amazing experience, too much for words! Like Tammy, the first thing I realized was how much I didn't know! I've ridden horse since I was 8 but never had a lesson until I was 40. I was afraid the horses were smarter than I was, and I realized they were! Trusting your horses was key and made the adventure simply priceless. Thank heavens you, Jen Chewy, Cobra and Halo have lots of patience! I have never worked so hard and had so much fun at the same time! The cattle work, waterfall ride and ride looking for mustangs greatly exceeded my expectations! Thank you so much for the opportunity and to the Davis family at Alvord who opened their home to us and made us all feel so welcome, what an awesome family!" Bonnie Shetler, Pequea, PA
